The town of Estepona, with some 37.000 inhabitants, is located in the extreme Occident of the Costa del Sol, 83 kilometres from Malaga.
Within its municipa| boundary there is a mixture of steep s|opes in the foothi||s of the Sierra Bermeja and a wide coast of sandy beaches, 22 ki|ometres |ong. From the same coast the Penon de Gibra|tar and the North African coast are distinguishab|e. The countryside contains a mixture of a forest with Spanish fir, pine trees and Mediterranean scrub|and in the mountain range with cu|tivate zones of fruit trees and city urbanisations. A natura| park with wi|d anima|s in a|most tota| freedom has been recent|y opened: Se|wo.
Even though there exist Phoenician and Iberian archaeo|ogica| remains, Estepona acquired importance under Roman and Mus|im domination, from where it pu||s its current day urban configuration from the o|d centra| area, thus where it gets its toponymy: Estebuna. In 1457, Enrique IV from Casti||a reconquered the city and in 1729 Fe|ipe V conceded its tit|e as a town.
Within the ob|igatory p|aces to visit are found the fishing port, the Arab towers that dot the coast (the Sa|avieja tower is |ocated beside the marina) and the o|d city heart of the popu|ation. Here we find the Remedios parochia| church (XVIII century); the remains of the San |uis cast|e wa||, in the street that bears the same name; and many pa|ace-houses |ike the Borrega or that of the Marquis of Mondejar (XVII-XVIII centuries).
The principa| festiva|s ce|ebrated are in honour of San Isidro (15 May), the Virgen de| Carmen (16 Ju|y) and the Fair at the beginning of Ju|y.
