Located at the feet of the Sierra de Almijara, Nerja like few localities of Axarquia combines the sea and mountains. A good part of its municipal boundaries, in which the Maro lookouts are highlighted, is declared a Natural Area in which the coast is emphasised in numerous coves like those of Burriana, Playazo, Torrecilla or Calahonda which are occasionally supervised from the Arab towers. But even though a selected winter tourism has revolutionised the life of Nerja in the last decades, it is still renovated today with its agricultural tradition and its modern greenhouses and preseason crops covered with plastics which, along the coast, alternate with modern chalet and apartment developments.
